Vallco Mall, once a bustling shopping center, began its decline in the 1990s. As demographics shifted, mid-range stores lost appeal among the more affluent residents. By 2022, the mall stood nearly empty, with just three tenants remaining. Palo Alto-based Sand Hill Property Company acquired the site in 2014, envisioning a fresh start.

Navigating Challenges and Crafting a Model

The Rise has weathered challenges: community opposition, pandemic-related delays, legal battles, and evolving legislative requirements. Despite these hurdles, the project gained approval from the Cupertino City Council in February. Now, it stands as a model for sustainable urban development.

    • Retail: 226,400 square feet
  • Building Heights: Most structures will be eight stories or less, emphasizing walkability and community integration.

While not a traditional conversion project (since the former mall was demolished), The Rise stands out for its remarkable scale. It’s a testament to innovative thinking, green spaces, and a commitment to meeting housing demands.
